<image:caption>This is a project designed and built in 2014 for the retrofitting of a house from 1940 in Providencia, Santiago, Chile. The project consisted in maintaining the existing materials as much as possible, such as the wooden floors, while intervening the service spaces.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Built projects - 3D scan house</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a two-storey house of 134 m2 built on a rural plot in Talagante, located at 45 km southwest of Santiago, Chile. It was designed from London upon a 3D scan record we made on-site. This gave us an accurate and detailed model of everything existing in the project’s area: pavements, barbecue shed, parking space, surrounding vegetation and the old existing hut to be replaced. Thanks to this record, the new house was carefully positioned within the existing elements, and its geometry and vistas were determined in relation to their presence.</image:caption>

<image:title>2015 Transforming UCL Exhibition - Solo Exhibition as winner of the Transforming UCL Competition</image:title>
<image:caption>Re_construction and record: exploring alternatives for heritage villages after earthquakes in Chile June 2015 to June 2016 After winning the Transforming UCL Competition with one of her research images, Bernadette had a solo exhibition of her PhD work. Two large scale images of her case studies are displayed along a 18 m long hoarding at Gordon St, UCL's entrance in London. These images are a top view of San Lorenzo de Tarapacá and a plan view of Lolol, with high level of detail, rendered using 3D scanning data that she obtained there in 2013. This technology is fast and accurate as a survey tool. Indeed, the images show all the 3D scans taken on these cases, which conform its complete heritage area, obtained in only three days in each case, although with only some samples of interior spaces. Some more images, explanations and videos of these cases are along the exhibition too. This is part of Bernadette's PhD research, which objective was to generate new architectural design alternatives to address conservation and re-construction of heritage villages after earthquakes through the exploration of sustainable and technological methods, and the role that accurate recording technologies have in that process. <image:title>2017 'Drawing Millions of Plans' Conference Exhibition - Drawing (on) the context: scanning, designing, building</image:title>
<image:caption>To survey existing sites and structures is probably the starting point of almost every architecture project aimed to be rooted in a specific place. Physical dimensions, vegetation, traces of use and prior constructions are incorporated in drawings as long as they are deemed relevant for the design and depending on the time available. Thus, a drawing of the context is, usually, a selective representation of reality. However, what if all physical features and every detail of the site can be drawn accurately and comprehensively in a short time? What if that information can be retrieved at any time without visiting it? 3D laser scanning recording technology can provide this type of information through a measurable three-dimensional digital model of the reality. Architects can draw upon it or use it as a basis for images, technical drawings, and videos, among other applications. Would the fact of conveying such amount of information affect the way architects design and draw? To reflect on the impact of this technology we look at the project of a house near Santiago, Chile. We designed it remotely from London upon a 3D laser scan record of the site made in 30 minutes. The new construction was carefully positioned within the existing elements, which determined its geometry and vistas.</image:caption>

<image:title>2020. Artwork at the 'Texture of Air' Permanent Exhibition - 2020. RNTNEH and EDH 3D Scan section artwork</image:title>
<image:caption>This artwork is a large scan section of the RNTNEH and the EDH buildings, where different cutting planes were overlapped in order to peek inside the rooms. This creates a view that is impossible to obtain in reality: as if the facades of the buildings were removed, exposing the interior occupancy and daily life illuminated by the 3D scanner. This artwork (Work 2) is part of the permanent exhibition ‘The Texture of Air’ at the new Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals. The project attempted to capture the memory of the old RNTNEH and EDH buildings while still in use, recording their spatial use and depicting activities using 3D laser scanning—also known as LiDAR. This generated a series of images that address their large scale while, at the same time, capture and showcase millimetric detail of objects, people and life, done by Bernadette. The exhibited artwork was done by Bernadette Devilat, in collaboration with Laura Mitchison. It consists of the 3D scan section printed on glass and illuminated from the back. All the work was done in partnership with the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL using LiDAR scans captured in training workshops at the hospitals' former homes on Grays Inn Road, with these UCL participants: Bernadette Devilat (tutor), Ecem Ergin, Felipe Lanuza, Fatma Zeyneb Onsiper and María Catalina Venegas at the EDH; and Lei Jiang, Shivani Shah and Victoria Wu at the RNTNEH. The exhibition was done by On the Record Community Interest Company, with funding by the HeritageLottery Fund and UCLH Arts and Heritage. It is open on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm at 47-49 Huntley Street in London. More information here: https://www.thetextureofair.uk/</image:caption>

<image:title>2020. Artwork at the 'Texture of Air' Permanent Exhibition - 2020. Work 2. RNTNEH and EDH scan section artwork</image:title>
<image:caption>This artwork is a large scan section of the RNTNEH and the EDH buildings, where different cutting planes were overlapped in order to peek inside the rooms (complete sections at the end), creating views that are impossible in reality: as if the facade of the buildings were removed, illuminated by the daily life under the scanner's light. This artwork is part of the permanent exhibition ‘The Texture of Air’ at the new Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals, open on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm at 47-49 Huntley Street in London. This exhibition was done by On the Record Community Interest Company, with funding by the HeritageLottery Fund and UCLH Arts and Heritage. More information here: https://www.thetextureofair.uk/ The project attempted to capture the memory of the old RNTNEH and EDH buildings while still in use, recording its spatial use and depicting activities, generating a series of images that address its large scale while, at the same time, capture and showcase millimetric detail of objects, people and life. This artwork was done by Bernadette Devilat, in collaboration with Laura Mitchison (On the Record) as the curator of the exhibition and the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL. It is made with LIDAR scans captured in training workshops at the hospitals' former homes on the Grays Inn Road, with these UCL participants: Bernadette Devilat (tutor), Ecem Ergin, Felipe Lanuza, Fatma Zeyneb Onsiper and María Catalina Venegas at the EDH; and Lei Jiang, Shivani Shah and Victoria Wu at the RNTNEH. <image:title>The Layered Absences of the Heygate Estate, South London (1974-2014) - ABSTRACT</image:title>
<image:caption>In this paper I introduce the notion of absence to interpret the experience of disused spaces and structures, which escape the present definition of architecture and the city as a designed and planned environment. Through this lens I look into the Heygate Estate in South London, a modernist council estate that remained almost empty for a decade, and was demolished in 2014 to give way to a contentious regeneration project. Before being demolished, the Heygate accumulated a range of interrelated absences linked to its state of disuse, including its detachment from and interruption of the formal urban context, the displacement of its residents, and its impending erasure. The method I propose to represent these absences is layering, a form of visual inquiry based on photography, which responds to absence’s capacity of evoking distant, uncertain and multiple presences that remain away from our grasp, so they have to be recreated through memory and imagination. In its openness, alternativeness, and in its social and political meaning, the disused and neglected Heygate strongly incarnated the values of Ignasi de Solá-Morales’ (1995, 1996) concept of terrain vague as ‘the form of absence’ in contemporary cities. The Heygate, nonetheless, challenged that definition in its clearly delimited physical structure, reflecting Pier Vittorio Aureli’s notion of absolute architecture (2010), which describes the potential of architectural form and limits to counter the forces of capitalist urbanisation. Both apparently opposite terms converge and complement each other to situate and understand the layered absences of the Heygate Estate. In accounting for a place left over by urban change, I advance alternative imaginaries to reflect on and critique the underpinning narratives of urban regeneration shaping the contemporary city, which determined the Heygate’s ultimate disappearance. <image:title>2025 Digital Records, Heritage Conservation and Post-earthquake Re-construction in Chile - Digital Records, Heritage Conservation and Post-earthquake Re-construction in Chile</image:title>
<image:caption>This exhibition explored the visual work underpinning the research published in the book with the same title, including 3D laser scanning, architectural representations, images, videos and 3D printed models of the heritage villages of Tarapacá, Zúñiga, and Lolol in Chile, as captured after, before and during the reconstruction processes carried out in response to the 2005 and 2010 earthquakes. The research proposes re-construction as an alternative methodology, based on 3D laser scanning, photography and questionnaires to the occupants, to analyse the as-built condition of earthquake-affected buildings, consider risk mitigation, and recognise adaptation to earthquakes and subsequent reconstructions. The material exhibited is the visualisation of measurable 3D point clouds of the three heritage areas selected — which have a precision of millimetres — allowing for the creation of a range of technical and visual outputs by dissecting and exploring the captured three-dimensional data. This metric accurate information can facilitate damage assessments to repair and intervene affected heritage buildings, instead of demolishing and building anew, while also providing the visual capabilities to engage with the local community and stakeholders. This will lead to more historical buildings conserved and is relevant not only for seismic-prone areas, but heritage at risk in general. This exhibition was displayed at the Embassy of Chile in London during May and June 2025, and then at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Nottingham, between June and September 2025.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Built Projects - 2007-2009 Tarapacá Project Library</image:title>
<image:caption>This project was a work that was planned and built as a prototype within the framework of Tarapacá Project, initiative for the re-construction of architectural heritage that was born as a response to the destruction caused by the 2005 earthquake, co-founded by Bernadette. This building was designed by the Tarapacá Group [Samuel Bravo, Bernadette Devilat, Verónica Illanes, Felipe Kramm, Álvaro Silva, Natalia Spörke] plus the winner team of Tarapacá Competition [Umberto Bonomo, Philippe Blanc, Macarena Burdiles y Cristián Olivos]. Renato D'Alençon and Francisco Prado collaborated. It was built in two stages, as the funding was obtained. The first stage was the front office of 10 m2 built in February 2007, using funds for student initiatives from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the Ministry of Education. The first part was built by the Tarapacá Group, volunteers and the local community, in an attempt to trespass the knowhow of the building technique so they can apply it to the re-construction of their houses. The second and final part was built by an external contractor in 2009, as the funding was obtained from the SUBDERE Programme of Urban Improvement of the Government of Chile. This prototype featured a new building technique, in an attempt to inform re-construction approaches. Since adobe houses were not included in Chilean seismic regulation and inhabitants were afraid of the seismic behaviour of traditional techniques, this new building system tried to recover some vernacular approaches by using traditional resources –recycled adobe bricks and canes– combined with contemporary materials such as concrete blocks, which were all available locally. The structural system is composed by concrete block masonry reinforced with interior steel bars and an upper beam connecting the walls. This is a well-known contemporary building technique approved by current the seismic regulations in Chile. However, measurements made in the settlement showed that this building system has not a good thermal behaviour, especially during nights when the exterior temperature drops down. Thus, in the design of the Library, an extra layer of earth composed of recycled adobes from previous walls, was added to the system. It works as a thermal mass layer, accumulating day’s heat and liberating it to the inside during the night. Thus, the envelope of adobes does not have any structural role, but it improves the thermal performance of the building. The roof is composed of a double structure, creating a layer of circulating air that prevents the direct transfer of the sun's rays into the inside. This allows maintaining a comfort temperature inside, counteracting existing outside temperatures. Subsequent measurements made in this prototype showed that this mixed system had a good thermal behaviour, maintaining the interior temperature in the comfort zone during all day and night, only with the mentioned passive design strategies.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Built Projects - 2005_Kindergarten extension</image:title>
<image:caption>The project consisted in the expansion of the "Jesús de Belén" kindergarten, which belongs to the NGO of Fraternal Aid San Pablo. Annually, this building receives more than 90 children in social risk from a vulnerable neighbourhood named “Los Héroes de la Concepción”, in Recoleta, Santiago. The extension provided a multipurpose room and an office for the kindergarten’s Director. Both volumes were built together, to optimize resources. The design of the project and its building process were scheduled almost together, which allowed adjusting to a very low budget. Considering that the courtyard of the kindergarten is the only space available for the large events and ceremonies at the end of the year, the multipurpose room was designed as ‘a stage’, thus located to be opened to the courtyard. This idea was supported by the use of a mobile enclosure that can be opened or be closed according to the courtyard’s use.</image:caption>

<image:title>2013-2014 Exhibitions - Part of 'Cities Methodologies' Exhibition: The role of the record: photography of earthquake affected areas through time</image:title>
<image:caption>The exhibition explored the changes -and the non-changes- that a heritage village in Chile, San Lorenzo de Tarapacá, has suffered since a large earthquake affected it in 2005 by the juxtaposition of photographic records taken in different periods of time, aiming to reveal sometimes imperceptible variations and to question the reconstruction process that follows the earthquake. Vertically, a series based on six archive photographs taken before the seismic event are presented. Horizontally, two photographic elevations of one street façade can be seen, the first taken a month after the 2005 earthquake and the second taken after the reconstruction has finished in 2013. As this method has the capacity of being a virtual database for memory, it is interesting how it could affect the decisions of demolition, intervention or replica in the design of reconstruction projects, especially when complemented with other recording technologies such as 3D laser scanning, further explored in Bernadette's PhD research. Exhibited materials are for sale. Please contact any of us if you are interested.</image:caption>

<image:title>2013-2014 Exhibitions - Part of PhD Research Projects Exhibition</image:title>
<image:caption>The exhibition explored products from the 3D scanning record done in two historical areas of Chile: San Lorenzo de Tarapacá and Zúñiga, affected by the 2005 and the 2010 earthquakes respectively, part of Bernadette's PhD research. The objective of this research is to generate new architectural and design alternatives to address the re-construction in heritage villages having into account the sense of sustainability that used to characterize them. By enquiring inhabitants’ social perception and using accurate recording technologies, such as 3D laser scanning, the role that the record may have in the definition of what is considered heritage and in the design of re-construction projects is being explored, understanding those technologies’ capacity of being a virtual database for memory, demolition, intervention or replica. The exhibition showed differents types of products from the 3D scan data: high resolution images from two dwellings in Zúñiga; 3D printed models of ruined houses in San Lorenzo de Tarapacá; and videos exploring the 3D record of these two places, which connected the images and models presented. This exhibition was part of the PhD Research Projects Conference 2014 at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and was open from the 25th February until the 21st March 2014. <image:title>Documents of Urban Change Exhibition - HOMES NOT RUBBLE</image:title>
<image:caption>(PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT 64.5 X 43.0 CM) Multi-layered composition made with photographs taken during a public demonstration against the demolition and replacement of the Aylesbury Estate, March 2015. People gathered at the northeast entrance of Burgess Park in the morning and marched to the west along Albany Rd, which defines the boundary between the park and the Aylesbury Estate. Then, the crowd went north along Thurlow St, up to the already demolished Heygate Estate site and then back via Camberwell Rd. They reached the west end of Burgess Park and turned east in Albany Rd to end the protest next to Chiltern, a high rise slab that was being occupied by a group of residents and campaigners. One demonstrator made a wooden sign with coloured letters, which gives the name to this image. He left it hanging from the fence’s security spikes. Through photographs merging into each other, the image evokes the fragile and vulnerable condition of the estate and its people, also encompassing the tensions at play in a contested site.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Documents of Urban Change Exhibition - VOICES</image:title>
<image:caption>(PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS 4500.0 X 2.0 CM) Series of alternating passages of unstructured (conversational) interviews done to three people living around the study area, who regularly visit Burgess Park. The interviews were done while walking around the park, where the interviewees could point at places and objects to address the questions asked by referring to places and objects at hand to their senses. The sequence is laid out in two lines that hold coherence in a linear way as well as holding an open dialogue with the other line. Only a limited amount of words of each line can be read before moving to the next point, which defines a reading that merges both lines in an open-ended way. Various images and objects collected on-site are placed close to the text, relating to it in a sometimes direct and sometimes oblique way. The multi-layered writing of WG Sebald and his use of images in the text are key references for this piece. No people from the Aylesbury Estate were interviewed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Looping sequence of photographs taken in the Aylesbury Estate and Burgess Park, September 2018 (15:36). Puddles show fragmented, blurred and inverted views of what they reflect, shaped by the contours of a random body of water formed in the ground after the rain. The sequence alternates photographs of each of two sites, where mud, stones, pavings, grass, asphalt and dirt enclose a partial view of the sky. Each image vanishes into the following one, blurring differences and revealing one place by looking into the other.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Documents of Urban Change Exhibition - TRANSITIONS</image:title>
<image:caption>Looping pair of multi-layered video compositions, made with footage recorded in Burgess Park and in one flat in the Aylesbury Estate, April 2018 (22:06:00). Due to the difference of duration between them (left 39:00, right 34:00), there is a changing relationship between both videos until they complete the whole cycle. The interior of the flat frames the views outside, which blends with overlaid videos of open spaces of Burgess Park. The absence of the Aylesbury is the absence of the park when it comes to the experience of people who have to move away. The absence of the park comes through the blending, vanishing videos of a place that sometimes seems present but sometimes seems a memory difficult to grasp.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Documents of Urban Change Exhibition - SKIES</image:title>
<image:caption>Two multi-layered photographic compositions made with photographs taken in Burgess Park and the Aylesbury Estate, March 2019 (50 X 50 cm). They are a view of the sky of a place by looking down to the floor –like looking at a puddle– where buildings and trees defining its upper, physical contours seem to reach a common sky. The gap, the displacement as well as the reflection between both images never reaching each other, echo the ongoing rupture between Burgess Park and the Aylesbury, which may end with the disappearance of the latter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Documents of Urban Change Exhibition - SOUNDSCAPE</image:title>
<image:caption>Audio recordings from Burgess Park and one flat in the Aylesbury Estate, April 2018 (undefined duration). Seven studio monitors (speakers) Placed across the exhibition space, bring in the sounds, which inevitably merge with the environmental noise in 22 Gordon Street. Tweeting birds of a park that is not here, passing conversations of people not to be seen around, the cracking of a wooden floor, along with other strange noises, add like immaterial layers in space. They bring the represented places closer to the experience in the exhibition space; at the same time, they put their absence into play.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2017-2018 Exhibitions - SEE-ING Exhibition. Storrs Gallery UNCC, Charlotte, US. 15th Oct-16th Nov 2018</image:title>
<image:caption>3D laser scanning as a form of representation The use of new technologies to record the environment is increasing as they become affordable and more accessible than ever before. Among them, 3D laser scanning is of particular relevance since it can provide full documentation of the reality in the form of a measurable coloured three-dimensional point cloud, from which different outcomes can be generated. This work explores its potential as a documenting tool and its importance to record the built heritage that is at risk of disappearance due to natural disasters. The image and video were rendered by Bernadette Devilat from a 3D laser scanning record done in Chile in January 2013, in the heritage village of Zúñiga, damaged by the 2010 earthquake. They represent a status of this settlement that will never exist again: partially destroyed by that earthquake with no reconstruction or repairs carried out since they started later. Because of this, the house explored in this exhibition is partially in ruins, yet still inhabited, an interesting dichotomy captured by the laser and camera of the scanner.</image:caption>
